1. Orange eSIM Holidays: Unbeatable price per GB

Orange eSIM Holidays card is at the top of our list for obvious reasons. With the best price per GB, they also offer a Spanish phone number with 100 minutes of voice calls and SMS for additional credit (useful in all EU countries). With 30GB for €25, there’s no doubt you’ll receive the best value for your money with a large amount of data to use within two weeks.

As a plus, you won’t need to be in Spain to activate it. Just buy it online and activate it. You’ll just need to provide an ID verification (required by Spanish law).

2. Bouygues: Activate it in France, enjoy it abroad

Bouygues Telecom offers a great price per GB in their plans. With a 15GB card for €16.90 for the Travel Basic plan, its price gets near Orange’s one. However, all their plans have a major downside. To activate them, you need to be within the territory of France. This means that you’ll need to plan your holidays with a detour.

They also offer a French phone number, providing unlimited calls and texts within Europe with their “travel basic+” and “my European eSIM” plans.

3. Simtex: Average prices, small data packages

Simtex offers cheap plans for tight budgets. You’ll receive 1GB, 3GB, 6GB or 10GB for prices ranging from €4 to €18 euros.

These plans are ideal if you’re not planning on using too much data during your holidays. While in price per GB are quite expensive, you’ll find them useful if you want to connect sporadically to the internet.

The cheapest price per GB Simtex offers is their 10GB offer with 1.8 €/GB for 30 days.

4. Airalo Maltafone: Cheap plans for limited data

With Airalo’s eSIMs, you’ll get limited data plans with an expensive price per GB. With a validity of 7 days for their cheapest offer (1GB, $4), we can only recommend it if you’re staying for a short holiday in Malta to disconnect from your home office.

All their other Airalo Maltafone plans offer a validity of 30 days, but with a small amount of data packages, so you’ll probably need to top them up, making them even more expensive than the competition.

5. Holafly: Expensive unlimited plans

Our last pick is Holafly. While they offer unlimited plans, their prices are quite expensive. Ranging from €19 to €99, they are limited by their duration (5 days, 10 days, 15 days, 20 days, 30 days, 60 days and 90 days).

If you’re planning to spend your holidays permanently using data on your phone, this might be your best option, but be aware that Holafly doesn’t allow tethering, so you won’t be able to connect any other device to your mobile phone to use your data allowance.

If you want to take full advantage of Holafly’s cards, plan carefully how much time you’ll be connected to your mobile phone while staying in Malta. And you can forget about fast speed connections, since they offer a 3G network.

6. Local SIM cards vs eSIMs

While travelling abroad and worrying about your roaming services, you might ask yourself whether you should get a local SIM card or a prepaid eSIM. While buying a local SIM card might be part of the experience of travelling, nothing beats the comfort of buying an eSIM from your own home. You’ll make sure you’ll have data connection as soon as you reach your destination, and won’t be bothered by roaming costs.

Local carriers in Malta offer their own eSIM cards, but they are not prepaid plans. Contracting a monthly plan with these carriers might carry the same issues that contracting a SIM plan on your own home country has.

With a prepaid eSIM plan, you’ll make sure it ends when you want it to end, no hidden fees and no problems.

For this reason, we think it’s always best to get a prepaid eSIM card if you’re going on holiday.

Using an eSIM when travelling to several countries

Roaming within the EU is free with local carriers from any European Union member state. If you’ve purchased Orange eSIM Holidays, or Bouygues Travel basic, Travel basic+ or my European eSIM, you won’t have any issues when visiting other countries in Europe other than Malta. In other cases, their plans are only for Malta, so if you plan to visit other territories during your holidays, you’ll have to check their regional or global eSIMs to avoid roaming costs.

Purchasing an eSIM

In order to purchase an eSIM, all you’ll need is an internet connection. You can buy an eSIM directly from the carrier’s website. Once you’ve made your choice, proceed with the purchase and you’ll receive an email after payment. There you’ll find a QR code to scan and a detailed guide on how to install it on your device.

However, before purchasing an eSIM, make sure your device supports eSIMs.

Apple devices and Google Phones support eSIMs since the iPhone XR/iPhone 11 and Google Pixel 3 and 3XL, Samsung devices since Samsung S20 and Huaweii P40 also have this technology integrated, among some others

Since eSIM technology is quite new, your device might not have the capability of using it, you can check if your device is compatible by searching for it in this list. To be sure you can use an eSIM, you should ultimately check with your device manufacturer, seller or your primary service provider or carrier.

How to set up your eSIM in Malta

If you’ve purchased your eSIM from the comfort of your own home, you’ll already have access to your eSIM on your device. As soon as you land on sunny Malta, check if you’ve disabled data roaming services from your primary carrier and activate it on your new eSIM.

If you don’t have your eSIM yet, connect to any WI-FI service available (to avoid expensive roaming costs) and proceed with the purchase.

Depending on your mobile phone setting up your eSIM might look like this:

Apple devices

  1. “Mobile Data”
  2. “Add Data Plan”
  3. Scan the QR Code.
  4. “Add Data Plan”
  5. Enter the PIN sent in the email.

Android devices:

  1. “Connections”
  2. “SIM Card Manager”
  3. “Add Mobile Plan”
  4. “Add using QR Code”
  5. Scan the QR Code.
  6. Enter the PIN found in the email.
